Italians far and wide swear by their family’s ability to make tomato sauce, or more commonly known as “gravy,” so it’s no wonder that the best gravy in Jersey title would be a highly-sought after prize. The Newark Star-Ledger recently hosted its Great Jersey Tomato Sauce Taste-Off, which invited three Italian-American chefs to judge which homegrown Jersey sauces would take the top honors. With some sauces sponsored by Jersey celebrities and others coming from long-established catering halls, the competition was stiff to say the least!
At the conclusion of the taste test, the runaway winner was Nanina’s in the Park, a longtime Belleville catering hall and wedding venue that launched its sauce line in 2006. With varieties including Tomato Basil, Vodka and Fra Diavolo, the sauces can be found at ShopRite and Kings Food Markets and could be the delectable boost this week’s pasta or lasagna have been begging for!
