How to Tackle the Top Food and Drink Etiquette Questions

Your wedding is a celebration of you and your significant other’s love, but the right food and drink can turn a party into an unforgettable soiree that your friends and family will talk about for years to come. Of course, proper etiquette plays an enormous role when planning out your menu, so to avoid any culinary faux-pas, here are a few major questions to answer before your big day.

  1. Can I skip alcohol?

If you are going to host a “dry” celebration, you should never include this information directly on your invitation. Instead, consider adding a tidbit on your invitation card insert, or place the information directly on your wedding website. This will ensure that your guests will know the plan before your ceremony kicks off.

  1. How do I handle food lifestyles/allergies?

Even if you’re an ardent vegan, your wedding is certainly not the time to try and turn your family and friends on toward your chosen lifestyle. Ideally, when planning a menu for a group with eclectic culinary tastes, it’s best to find a middle ground that will appeal to everyone. For instance, a vegetarians and non-vegetarian entrée is a great start, and throw in a pasta entrée as well to give your guests some variety. Additionally, insert a line on your RSVP card about any dining issues your guests may have that you can plan for well in advance.

  1. Do I need a kids menu?

If you are allowing your guests to bring their kids to your celebration, you will need to work with your caterers to provide a small selection of foods that will appeal to them. As you receive your RSVPs, keep a tally of the kids who will be attending who are 13 and under (13 and older should be able to eat the adult fare), and have your caterers put together something simple like spaghetti, chicken fingers and a small dessert. Typically, these foods are not that expensive and will keep the little ones happy throughout the night!
