Wedding guests to spend an average of $673 per wedding in 2015

There are few events that are as fun as heading to a friend or family member’s wedding! It’s your chance to break out your finest attire, reunite with loved ones from your past and dance the night away. We all know that weddings have become increasingly expensive over the years, and according to new research by American Express guests will spend on average $673 per wedding throughout 2015.

That may seem like a staggering number at first, but when you factor in travel, accommodations, gifts, attire and other considerations, those expenditures can add up quickly! According to Forbes magazine, guests will spend 14 percent more (up from $592 in 2014) than last year, and many are seeing these events as their chance to strut their stuff.

“Not only are Americans saying ‘yes’ to attend more events, but they’re also taking advantage of the opportunity to purchase and show off a new outfit, or turn a destination wedding into a mini-vacation,” said Jed Scala, senior vice president of proprietary lending at American Express, told the news source.

Strangely enough, American Express reported that members of the wedding party will only spend $28 more than their counterparts, but this is not including extraneous events like bachelor/bachelorette parties, bridal showers and engagement parties that may be additional expenses.

While weddings are certainly becoming more extravagant whether you’re a guest or a groomsman, there’s no substitute for planning ahead to save on travel accommodations, co-buying gifts with friends to split the cost and many other strategies to ease the expense of an upcoming wedding. After all, your friends and family members will (hopefully) only get married once, so this is absolutely the time to let your hair down, open up your wallet a bit and make lasting memories with the ones you love!
