Grooming Timeline: Self-Care and Prep for Grooms

Grooming Timeline: Self-Care and Prep for Grooms

As the groom, it’s only natural that you’d want to look your best for one of the most important days of your life—your wedding. If you’re not sure where or when to start the process, review this grooming timeline—a series of self-care and prep steps for grooms.

One Week Before the Wedding—Haircut

Whether you have a glorious mane or you like to keep it buzzed short, your hair may need a touch-up before the big day. At the very least, you need to have any split ends or problem spots cleaned up before you walk down the aisle.

If you’re planning a big hairstyle change before the wedding, don’t risk surprising your significant other with a new look! Give him or her a heads-up about the change so it won’t be an unpleasant shock.

Be sure you visit a trusted hair salon or barbershop to get your hair cut about a week before the wedding. Your wedding haircut should be in the hands of an expert, not an amateur.

A Few Days Before the Wedding—Fingernails and Toenails

Manicures and pedicures are important for guys too, especially before a huge occasion such as your wedding. You can get a manicure at a shop or take care of it yourself at home. Just make sure the process includes nail clipping, filing, and cuticle treatment so your fingers look well-cared-for when your photographer snaps those wedding rings pics.

You don’t want raggedy toenails slicing your new spouse’s ankles on the wedding night, so be sure to get those nails clipped and smoothed as well. If you’ve got unsightly calluses, blisters, or fungi going on, be sure to have those treated weeks before the wedding so your feet look healthy rather than disgusting.

A Day or Two Before the Wedding—Eyebrows, Ears, and Noses

Flyaway nose hairs, bristly ear hairs, and bushy eyebrows might be perfectly acceptable to your significant other, or they might be a bit of a turnoff. While your special someone loves you just as you are, it may be a treat for him or her to see you take your appearance to the next level!

Consider tweezing or trimming those Gandalf eyebrows, plucking or trimming the escaping nose hairs, and pulling any crazy ear hairs as well. You’ll present a more polished, attractive appearance at your wedding, and your spouse-to-be will appreciate your efforts.

On the Wedding Day—Facial Hair

Does your significant other prefer you shaven or unshaven? Do you like a clean-shaven look, a beard, a goatee, or some other style of facial hair? Decide ahead of time how you’ll handle your facial hair for the wedding and be sure you do any trimming, shaving, combing, or shaping regularly in the days leading up to the wedding.

On the morning of the big day, take care of the grooming yourself or have a professional do the finishing touches for your look.

More Self-Improvement Options

You can add other self-improvement steps to this process if you like: regular workouts or diet improvements starting months before the wedding, teeth whitening a couple weeks beforehand, and grooming of private areas during the preceding week. Your spouse-to-be isn’t marrying you for your grooming habits—but taking the time and putting in that extra effort to look good on your wedding day is always appreciated.
